There's An Alligator Under My Bed

We continued learning about Mercer Meyer while focusing on the book There's An Alligator Under My Bed. We did lots of fun crafts and activities with alligators and spent some time learning about real alligators on the internet.

We used bubble wrap to paint alligators.
We used egg cartons to make alligators.
We played Crocodile Dentist.
And our favorite activity this week was growing alligators. We ordered these alligators from Steve Spangler Science. These were really fun. I made a chart for Caleb and Hannah to measure and record how long the alligators were each day.

The alligators were 4 1/2 inches when we began.

We put them in a tub of water to let them grow all week.
They grew to be 12 inches long. These are also reusable. They are suppose to go back to their original size. We have had them out of the water for 2 days. They are shrinking, but very slowly.

McRuffy Kindergarten Phonics
The big news in phonics this week was our very first spelling test. Caleb LOVED taking a spelling test. I'm sure that will change when the words get harder. This weeks list was (is, the, cat, sat, and hat). On the pre-test he spelled "the" "t-u-h" but the rest of the week he got them all right.

McRuffy First Grade Math
Caleb did his first work with geoboards this week.

Preschool
We worked on the letter Ff and John 3:16 with activities from Raising Rockstars Preschool.

Game Time
We played LOTS of games this week! Memory, Perfection, Hulabaloo, Candyland, Trouble, and more!

More Fun

When we went to Stone Mountain, Papaw insisted on buying these huge lollipops. Hannah actually finished hers in about 3 days. Caleb still has about half of his.

After we finished school one day the kids went to the living room to play. I stayed in the office preparing a few activities for the next day. I thought Hannah was playing with her baby dolls. This is how I found her. She doesn't take naps (other than occasionally in the car) so this really surprised me. Not sure why she was so tired this day. All that licking was exhausting apparently!

Next week will be very busy with lots of "life" interruptions so I don't plan on introducing much of anything new next week. I hope to get in some science since we didn't do that this week, but the rest will probably just be put on hold for a week.

10 Little Rubber Ducks

Bo Curriculum Year 3- September Week 2
10 Little Rubber Ducks by Eric Carle

We had lots of fun with ducks this week and continued learning about author and illustrator Eric Carle.

We used feathers to paint duck pictures.
We made tissue paper ducks.
Painted duck feet
And painted our feet- Caleb and Hannah loved this and laughed so hard while I painted their feet.
Our duck puppet- Little Quack- joined us for all of our activities this week. Little Quack books were our FAVORITES this week for sure.

McRuffy Phonics- Kindergarten
Thankfully the pace is picking up a little bit with phonics work. The first reader for this curriculum was introduced this week. Even though Caleb found it EXTREMELY easy, it was fun to have more to work with. We worked on story comprehension, retelling, and predicting.

McRuffy Math- First Grade

Caleb worked on place value, simple addition, number words, counting to 200 and recognizing numbers to 200, tangrams, time to the half hour, and counting by fives (nickels).

Our Bible verse this week was Phillipians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
They colored, cut out, and glued a strong guy with the Bible verse.
Hannah worked on writing the letter I.
Hannah cut out her key word cards.
Hannah and I played Lucky Ducks several times this week- Caleb played a few times too.
McRuffy Science- Kindergarten

We learned about magnets this week. Caleb and Hannah sorted objects by magnetic and not magnetic. We talked about north and south poles on magnets. We read about magnets in our Usbourne Children's Encyclopedia, and did a few online experiments.

Other Fun Stuff
On Friday night we went to a Sunday School Fellowship and had so much fun playing with friends, fishing, riding 4-wheelers and Caleb even got to take a ride on a tractor.

The Very Quiet Cricket

We began our new year of Itty Bitty Bookworm this week. The past year we jumped back and forth between year one and year two of the Bo Curriculum. This year they have added year 3 beginning with September. We are very excited about the addition of an author/illustrator focus. I have always made a big deal about pointed out the author and illustrator of a book so our kids insist that you tell them the author and illustrator. To them it is just as important as the title- and well it is of course. This week and next week we are focusing on Eric Carle. We own tons of Eric Carle books and borrowed several others from the library. We visited Eric Carle's web page, watched him demonstrate his tissue paper painting techniques, and watched and listened to Carle read his most famous book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Our focus book was Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket so our week was all about crickets.
We spent several days working on layering paint colors on tissue paper just like Eric Carle does to illustrate his books.

Dad found us a cricket to observe. We fed it grapes and carrots.
Caleb and Hannah painted crickets pictures.
Preschool
From Raising Rock Stars Preschool, Hannah worked on the color blue, the number 3, the letter Hh and the word "and". She is so excited to be learning some site words and often brings me a book and says "Mommy, here's my word!".

Caleb joins us for a few parts of our RRSP work. Basically just whatever he sees that he wants to do. I don't require him to do any of it other than listen to our Bible Story and learn the Bible verse. He likes seeing how long the Bible verse is after he cuts it out and tapes it together.
Handwriting practice
Hannah working on her Bible verse craft.

Hannah traced her foot as part of her other preschool worksheets.
Other Fun

We had family visiting for the Labor Day weekend and took a day trip to Stone Mountain.
