Our Country Begins: July 3-9

Sunday, July 3 Caleb turned 6 1/2.  None of our plans for the day were actually intended to celebrate the milestone but we did have a great day together.  We recently finished reading MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS and LOVED it.  After church on Sunday we went to see the movie.  We really did enjoy the movie although it wasn't as good as the book.  Later we had pizza and dessert at our neighbors house and stayed late playing games together on the Wii.  A GREAT DAY!
Here are my little patriotic darlings all dressed up for church.

This week we began transitioning back into school.  We spend the mornings doing our Bible lesson, calendar time, and Social Studies.  Caleb also does a simple math review sheet and Hannah is learning some sight words.  Our big focus though is Social Studies.  We are using Harcourt First Grade A Child's View.  I am not using the book in order, but rather I have divided the book up to fit more appropriately into our year.  For example, we began with chapter three because it focuses on the beginning of America and of course July is a great time to study that.

Here is a peak at our book shelf this week.
We used glitter paint to make pictures of fireworks.

We also endured a not so great puppet show at our local library on Wednesday.  On Thursday we greatly enjoyed story time at a different library.  Calling it "story time" is somewhat deceiving though I think.  It is geared for 4 year olds and up and is very educational and yet so much fun at the same time.  Story time was followed by lunch and playtime at a friend's home (my friend's husband even blessed us with a great science class on animal pelts while we visited).
